Every DNA company sells ethnicity estimates the same way: a big number of "regions," a colourful map, and a percentage breakdown that looks satisfyingly precise.

Almost none of them explain the thing that actually determines whether those percentages are any good. So before the recommendations, here is the concept that will let you evaluate any of these products yourself.

What an ethnicity estimate actually is

Your DNA does not contain a label that says "34% Irish." There is no Irish gene.

What happens instead is a statistical comparison. The company assembles a reference panel — DNA from people with documented, deep ancestry in specific places. Your DNA is then compared against those reference groups, and the algorithm estimates what mixture of them best explains your particular pattern of variants.

Three things follow from this, and they explain nearly every complaint people have about ethnicity results:

  1. Your estimate is only as good as the reference panel. If a company has thin reference data for a region, your ancestry from that region gets absorbed into a neighbouring category or a vague continental bucket.
  2. Your results change when the panel changes. This is why your percentages shifted after an update and nobody told you why. Your DNA did not change. The comparison set did.
  3. Different companies give different answers. Not because some are "wrong," but because they are running different comparisons against different reference sets.
The metric that matters

Ignore the region count in the marketing. Ask instead: how deep is this company's reference panel for the specific parts of the world my ancestors came from? A test with excellent European sub-regional resolution and thin West African data will serve two customers very differently.

AncestryDNA — best for most people

AncestryDNA is the best first ancestry test for most people, earning that position through reference-panel depth, tiered region resolution, and integrated historical records — with a 30+ million-person network, 70+ billion records, and 3,600+ regions and Journeys after its 2025 update.

Two things set it apart, and neither is the raw kit count.

Reference panel depth. AncestryDNA and 23andMe both use 2026 ethnicity reference panels, providing detailed breakdowns for regions such as Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian, including sub-regional precision down to specific counties in Ireland. That county-level resolution is a direct consequence of having enough reference samples from those counties.

The records integration. This is the underrated part. An ethnicity percentage on its own is a party fact. Combined with 70+ billion historical records and a family tree, it becomes a research tool. The DNA points you at a region; the records tell you which of your ancestors came from there.

In a survey of 1,592 DNA-test users, AncestryDNA won every head-to-head matchup — among people who had taken all three of AncestryDNA, 23andMe and MyHeritage, 52% picked AncestryDNA, more than three times the next brand.

The honest downsides: no chromosome browser, which frustrates serious genetic genealogists. Meaningful features sit behind a subscription. And AncestryDNA has never accepted raw data transfers from other companies — you must test with them to be in their database.

23andMe — best for deep ancestry and haplogroups

23andMe's distinctive ethnicity contribution is not its regional breakdown. It is haplogroups.

Haplogroup reporting is included in the base $99 Basic Ancestry kit. A haplogroup is the deep-ancestry branch of the human family tree your maternal (mtDNA) or paternal (Y-DNA) line sits on, reaching tens of thousands of years back. The maternal haplogroup is included for all testers; the paternal haplogroup is reported directly for testers with a Y chromosome, and others can access one through a connected father or full brother. The product also includes 4,500+ Recent Ancestor Locations and an Ancestry Timeline.

This is a genuinely different axis of ancestry information. Autosomal ethnicity estimates reach back roughly 5–7 generations. Haplogroups reach back tens of thousands of years, along a single line. Getting both in a $99 kit is real value.

The 23andMe situation, stated plainly. 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in March 2025 and has since been sold; it is currently operational under new ownership, and existing customers retain access to their accounts and reports. The buyer was the TTAM Research Institute, and 23andMe paused public reporting of its user numbers after the Chapter 11 and sale.

The company is operating. But if the long-term custody of your genetic data is a concern for you, that history is a legitimate input to your decision, and we are not going to pretend it away.

MyHeritage — best for non-US and European ancestry

If your family is from continental Europe, the Middle East, or Scandinavia, MyHeritage's database is disproportionately likely to contain your relatives — because that is where its user base is concentrated.

Its matching network of around 7 million users is smaller than AncestryDNA's but proportionally stronger outside North America, and its chromosome browser is open to all users, which AncestryDNA does not offer.

There is also a significant technical change worth knowing about. MyHeritage announced an upgrade from array-based genotyping to low-pass 2x whole-genome sequencing in October 2025 and reported the transition complete at RootsTech 2026.

Read that carefully, because the word "whole-genome" is doing a lot of marketing work. "Low-pass 2x" means the genome is read about twice over on average — enough for genealogy matching, ethnicity estimates and Genetic Groups, but not the higher-coverage sequencing clinical labs use. It should be read as a genealogy-grade upgrade, not medical-grade testing.

Two important operational notes: MyHeritage stopped accepting raw-DNA uploads in mid-May 2025, so a MyHeritage kit is now required to enter its matching database. And it frequently discounts heavily — the list price is rarely the price you need to pay.

FamilyTreeDNA — best for line-specific deep ancestry

FamilyTreeDNA is the only major consumer platform offering three distinct test types: Family Finder (autosomal, ~$79), Big Y-700 (deep paternal Y-DNA, ~$449), and mtFull Sequence (full mitochondrial sequencing) — run in a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited in-house lab.

For ethnicity estimates specifically, it is not the leader. FamilyTreeDNA focuses primarily on genealogical matching rather than ethnicity estimates, making its reference panels less suitable for detailed geographic ancestry breakdowns.

But for tracing a single paternal or maternal line thousands of years deep, nothing else in the consumer market competes. And it has a genuinely useful feature: FamilyTreeDNA accepts free raw-DNA uploads from AncestryDNA, 23andMe and Living DNA. You can enter its database without buying a kit.

The strategy nobody sells you

Test once, upload everywhere. The cost-effective approach: test at AncestryDNA for the combination of largest database and best tools, then transfer your raw results free to FamilyTreeDNA and Living DNA to maximise your match pool. You can also upload to Genomelink and GEDmatch to widen the net further.

You paid for one kit. Your data now sits in four or five databases. This is straightforwardly the highest-value move in consumer genetic genealogy, and no company will tell you about it because it involves you not buying their kit.

The one constraint: AncestryDNA and 23andMe have never accepted transfers, and MyHeritage has stopped accepting them. The upload strategy works into FamilyTreeDNA, Living DNA and the third-party sites — not into the big three.
